Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds in known for.
Multi-Regional Blend
The 2020 Bin 389 showed up as a classic Aussie blend, highlighting the complementary nature of cabernet and shiraz in the experienced hands of Penfolds. The wine is noteworthy for its spiced black fruit counterpointed by elements of freshening red cherry and blueberry. Enhancing notes of bitter chocolate, gunpowder, graphite, black olive and sweet, smoky, vanillan oak add gravitas. There's an excellent acid drive and the tannins, although firm, benefit the total outcome. This 389 is in the early stages of its evolution. Cellaring for at least ten years will be beneficial.
